Concrete Floor Grinding and Preparation in Bendigo
Grinding concrete makes silica dust, and WorkSafe Victoria's guidance names the controls it expects: on-tool water suppression or on-tool dust extraction. A job that is ground dry with no extraction is a reason to ask more questions before you agree.

What concrete floor grinding and preparation in Bendigo actually involves
Crystalline silica is a natural mineral found in construction materials such as concrete, and its dust is generated when those materials are mechanically processed, for example by cutting or grinding. WorkSafe Victoria says effective dust controls, such as on-tool water suppression or on-tool dust extraction, need to be used. Water suppression works at the point where the dust is made, and it is effective only when the resulting slurry is managed and cleaned up in a way that does not generate dust: slurry needs to be managed so it does not dry out.
For you as the householder
Ask which method the contractor uses, how slurry will be collected and where it will go. EPA Victoria's rule is that wastewater must be kept out of stormwater drains so far as reasonably practicable, so a wash-down straight into a driveway gutter is a question to raise before the job, not after.

Before grinding starts
If the floor has old tiles, sheet vinyl or adhesive laid before 1990, Asbestos Victoria says it is safest to assume it contains asbestos. That belongs on the table before any grinder is switched on. The garage floor page covers old coverings.
A floor that has been flooded is a different starting point from one that has not. The suburb pages for Heathcote, Kangaroo Flat, Marong and Epsom set out where Greater Bendigo's flood history is on record; mention it when you describe the job.

Concrete Floor Grinding and Preparation in Bendigo — common questions
What does on-tool water suppression mean?
WorkSafe Victoria says it uses water at the point of dust generation to dampen or suppress dust before it is released into the air, and that it works when the slurry is managed and cleaned up so it does not generate dust.
Where does the slurry go?
Not into the stormwater drain. EPA Victoria says wastewater must be kept out of stormwater drains so far as reasonably practicable, so ask where the contractor will collect and dispose of it.
Is dust extraction an alternative to water?
WorkSafe Victoria names on-tool dust extraction alongside on-tool water suppression as an effective control when grinding materials that contain crystalline silica.
